Auditions
Next Auditions: Spring 2010
Details:
Exit 245 holds auditions every semester. We get together with the rest of the JMU A Cappella community and hold try outs over 3 or 4 days searching for the best and the brightest JMU has to offer. The first few days are dedicated to the initial try out and the final day is reserved for callbacks. It doesn't matter which day you come to the initial try out.
It can seem a bit intimidating. Imagine 300 hopefuls showing up at the same time all trying to get an audition time. No worries though, we make sure we hear everyone. Be thankful you are a guy, JMU statistics are on your side and we hear anywhere between 40 and 80 guys every semester. The auditions are open so you show up and sign up for the groups you would like to try out for. As you try out you'll get a feel which group fits best and the groups find who they would like to call back.
The audition consists of:
1. Range Testing - We will have you sing a scale to the top and bottom of your range. If you have no idea what part you sing, that's totally fine, this gives us a better picture of how you would fit.
2. Pitch Recall - We will play for you a series of pitches and you sing them back for us.
3. Rhythm Reading - Syncopation. Our music has a lot of it and it helps to have a little rhythm. It's much like sight singing we're just curious if you have had it or not, if yes...awesome, if not...that's fine, too.
4. Verse and Chorus of a pop song that shows off your voice best. Please don't sing Musical Theatre or Classical. While these are all valid forms of music, we want to hear styles of music that we sing to see how you would fit with our group. FYI: Top 40, Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, Country, and Bluegrass are all great choices.
Good luck and We hope to see you out there!
